You've said that an editor can't force a writer to use a character he doesn't like. Fair enough. Should an editor prevent a writer from killing or otherwise ruining a character the writer doesn't like or care about? Because when this happens it causes a hassle to other writers who like the character as well as the fans. If a writer doesn't like a character, he shouldn't ruin him/her for everyone else

First off, an editor can force a writer to use a character–it’s just not a very good idea, and seldom leads to great stories.
Secondly, one person’s “ruined and destroyed” is another person’s “classic & beloved storyline.” If there’s one thing that’s true, it’s that the audience doesn’t universally agree on anything. No editor deliberately sits down to ruin a character. Rather, they weigh the pros and cons of each potential story and make decisions based upon what they think is best.
