  • New Readers vs Old Readers

In regards to the anonymous person railing against you for new #1s and “not being Mark Gruenwald”, the idea that you, or Marvel as a company should focus solely on “hardcore readers”… you know this, but I figured I’d jump into the horrifying fray.

As a retailer, I know that marketing only to current readers is death. A company and business always needs to seek a new audience, and does so by having a wide array of titles and concepts. Focusing on the audience that is already there is a game of inevitable diminishing returns, as some folks eventually lose interest, move, lose jobs, buy houses, have children or expire. The only reason Marvel still exists today is a willingness to explore new concepts and ideas, keeping a steady inflow of new readers, and I appreciate it greatly.
