The problem with time travel stories is that they can be great character defining moments like Kurt Busiek’s the Nearness of You in Astro City or they can be crappy What If stories where everything gets reverted back to the starting point with absolutely no stakes and no consequence and no relevance to the characters. That’s the real problem with time travel stories- too many writers use them as the latter

You could say the same thing about all stories, though–they can be told poorly or they can be told well.
