  • I have photos from a Marvel panel at 1988's ComicCon in which several Marvel staffers are in their underwear, forming a human pyramid, and having pies thrown in their faces. For the life of me I can't remember why any of this happened, although I have the photo evidence that it did in fact happen. Any idea what the context was?

Yes, that would have been one of the Marvel panels of that era, presided over by Mark Gruenwald.

At the time, Mark found most convention panels to be pretty boring affairs, and all the same–show a few slides of upcoming books, open up the floor to Q & A, rinse and repeat. And none of it really had any great effect on selling comics.

So instead, Mark decided to turn Marvel’s panels into performance art, into living game shows in which fans from the crowd would compete against Marvel creators and editors for prizes. The photos you’re talking about would seem to be of two of the many games that Mark devised.
