AIM was not that of a serious organization back in the days, When did they become a Major player in 616 Universe. Was it after they purchased the Island. How did they become so powerful and rich to buy the island. Which issue best summarizes their way to power?

AIM may have had a few bad years there in the middle, but they were always a serious organization. As tends to happen from time to time, people who hadn’t read their original appearances judged them by their most recent appearances and wrote them that way for a while.

But really, I think it was IRON MAN 3 and its use of AIM that put the organization back on the map and made people start to treat it more seriously as an entity.
