Tom- Thanks for answering my original question about the Alex Ross variant covers. Here's a follow up question. Why not just sell the main cover and the variant in 50/50 ratios for the same cover price? I would buy both covers in a second. Didn't Marvel once use this sales tactic?

There are certain covers for which we use that ratio.
But the purpose of the variants are to get more copies into the stores, and to help move units. And the 50/50 ratio doesn’t do that as effectively as other ratios do.
