How are collected editions of classic series determined? Does it usually have to do more with an upcoming media blitz, or a renewal of the franchise in the form of a new book? And from there, how is the method determined, from it being an Essential collection to a trade or even an Omnibus?
It’s probably less scientific than you would like. Every year, we’re going to produce a certain number of books–regular rolling collections of our new stuff, and a certain number of books in each of the assorted classic formats. So we try to spread those around, based on what material isn’t in print, and what might be promoted via the films or the animation or whatever. But then, really, it just comes down to the guys in that department making a choice.
