  • I recently found out that the guy putting together the Sinister Six in the movies is Gustav Fiers, somebody whose only apearance was in a Spider-Man novel. Is Gustav Fiers a canon character to the MU? By extension, are novels considered canon?

Novels are not considered part of continuity, no. There are rare exceptions–but even those tend to fall on the side of “doesn’t violate continuity” rather than being an active part of continuity.

That said, a film or television or animated adaptation of one of our characters can draw inspiration from any incarnations they may have the rights to.
