Tom, I've seen this view floating around the comics industry and fandom that trade-waiting doesn't help books. True/False?

Buying the collected edition certainly contributes to the success and longevity of a series.
The only instance where it doesn’t is if the sales on the individual releases are so weak that you’re about ready to cancel the book even before the collection comes out.
So, the reality is somewhere in the middle.
