Tom, when a writer completely messes up a character compared to how they were previous or are concurrently (Like Bendis with The Hood), is it on the writer? or is it the editor who screwed up by not having them keep the character in line with how others are handling them?

One person’s “messing up” is another persons “using and evolving.”

In the case of The Hood, nobody was using him, and virtually nobody had used him since the original limited series (the exception being Dwayne McDuffie in BEYOND.) So Brian moved the character in new directions in NEW AVENGERS, and that also led to him appearing in a lot of other places. You may like those developments or you may hate them as a reader, same as with any other story developments. But characters tend to change and develop over time.

At the end of the day, these are choices that get made. And yes, you should always blame the editor for allowing them.They are responsible.
