Just because a character sold at one time doesn’t mean that they’re going to be able to maintain that sales appeal for all time. The history of comics is littered with characters who had a momentary time in the sun, and then became just another face in the crowd.
In the 90s, at least at first, I think X-Man had the heat from Age of Apocalypse and the X-MAN logo to help carry him over. But his series was pretty constantly among the lower-selling X-titles for the back half of its lifespan–which also coincides with around when the original concept ran its course (or stopped being mentioned) and the character became more and more entangled in the miasma of ongoing X-plotlines.
Could you sell an X-MAN book today? Maybe. But I don’t know that that book would have to star Nate Grey.
