  • Why do you think there haven't been many breakout heroes and villains in the 14 years of this new century? We've seen new iterations of old characters (Winter Soldier, Ghost Rider) but not much in the way of whole-cloth for a bit.

    Well, the landscape is already full of older characters who retain their popularity and appeal, so the stage is already crowded for any new character who appears. Plus, our audience, especially the long-term readers, seem to have difficulty embracing a new character the way they did the guys they read about when they were young and just starting out. So a new character is “not real” to them, regardless of what stories they might appear in.
