I think it’s really a question of whether you subscribe to the notion of there being just one singular person who is right for you.
That’s a romantic notion, and one that’s been sold very heavily over the years, but I don’t know that it quite reflects reality.
I’ve certainly known people whose spouse has died who’ve gone on to remarry and been happy–so which was the one true love, the first spouse or the second?
Had Gwen lived, would Pete have married her? Probably. Would they have worked out as a couple long-term? Who can say? But that’s not what happened, and he would up with Mary Jane instead–and that relationship was just as honest and direct and meaningful (more, to a lot of readers.)
I became a Spider-Man reader in the days immediately following Gwen’s death, so to me personally she always has that advantage. But I don’t think the reality is quite as simple as that.
