Byrne and Cockrum also didn't come up in the modern era where artists can become hot in two issues time. If I were a hungry young artist and someone said "I'll let you draw Ant Man for six issues," I would jump on it. But your post does illustrate that generally the rich will become richer and the Wolverines and Spider Mans in the current era of comics will consistently have an advantage over lesser known concepts in Marvel's cast of characters.
I disagree with your opening statement, i don’t think we live in a world in which an artist can become hot in two issues’ time. In fact, I feel that it’s harder than ever for an artist to have the kind of superstar breakout that Byrne did.
