Will Sandman ever overcome his brainwashing and return to being his real self? He's been a brainwashed puppet for nearly 20 years now. How is this in anyway "character work"?

I think a very good argument could be made that this is his real self, and that the “nice guy” version was a result of the trauma he experienced after being forcably merged with Hydro-Man.
