what would have happened if rom hadjoined the avengers in avengers #221 or west coast avengers #1? would he have just been expunged from history and never mentioned regardless of how hypothetically prominent he may have been? i'm mostly curious because things worked out quite lucky that rom was rather self-contained in that regard. imagine if rom was in avengers undier siege and the burden it would present in having THE definitive avengers story unprintable due to license issue with a character.

That was never a possibility, even back then, so the point is moot. For all that he was one of a dozen heads on those “who will be an Avenger” covers, that had everything to do with Rom having a book that was then being published, and nothing to do with him being an actual option that any Avengers writer legitimately considered, given that he was a licensed character even then.
