  • “Storytelling may be the most important part of what you do–and obviously, it is–but none of it matters if everybody is white.”

Does the inverse count? Can there be great stories that don’t count just because there are no white people? I understand the need for diversity but I don’t think this was a strong argument. The best characters aren’t defined by their race. They’re defined by their personal beliefs and their actions. They could be influenced by race, but I don’t think the best characters are defined by it. I think a good character is one who relates to all readers, black, white, spanish, etc. It’s rough when you have a visual medium, but take SPIDER-MAN as a strong example. If all his stories were prose, would the color of his skin really matter? I don’t even know what nationality Peter Parker is. I just know that he encompasses the goodness that lies in humanity and the short-comings thereof. That isn’t restricted to people of one race or nationality. It’s open to all of humanity.
