  • How come you and Busiek decided that the possibility of the Avengers of the 1950s existing in canon was detrimental to the real team. Even though they made one obscure appearance in a What If, you went to the extreme of destroying an entire reality just to ensure that they never devalue the legacy of the real Avengers by having come before them. Yet, in the last 5 years, you've edited two canon stories where there have been groups that called themselves the Avengers before the real deal.

    I find the phrase “you went to the extreme” in this instance to be kind of funny. It took no more effort to erase that whole continuity than it did to do any other story–no extreme required.

    But some of it is the specific context in which these stories took place. Neither the 1959 Avengers nor the upcoming 1972 Mighty Avengers are quite super hero teams, neither were they a going concern. And some of it, surely, is that opinions can change over time–so what I did in 1999 I might not do the same way in 2009.
