I don’t think it’s cheap if you buy into the actions of the characters–if you can understand the drives and points of view that bring them into conflict. And it’s far less contrived than having all of these characters getting along and agreeing on every action, especially when things get into areas of difficult morality.
Plus, one of the hallmarks of the Marvel style going back to Stan Lee is that hero would fight hero. It became a cliche, and was sometimes (often) not terribly well motivated after awhile, but that was another way in which the stories Stan and company were doing were less cookie-cutter and more realistic than everybody else’s.
