  • >I’ve noticed that some lettering in the main Marvel U uses lower caps. I’ve never liked this as I preferred all caps when reading text.

Who decides what kind of lettering to use on a book?>

Comics have traditionally used ALL CAPS lettering, largely because the printing in the 1930s and 1940s was so inconsistent that there was always a fear that the lettering would close up or run together–ALL CAPS gave you a better chance at legibility.

But a decade ago, we began using Upper-Lower extensively. And now, it’s really the choice of the creative team and the editor as to which way to go.

The Ultimate books exclusively use Upper-Lower–but at least in recent cases, characters from the MU who enter the Ultimate Universe still speak in ALL CAPS, and vice versa.
