Other way around, i think–many writers were editors first. And some of that is that, in the days you’re thinking of, there was only a single Editor at Marvel, who was typically selected from among a few staff editors. but that was 40 years ago, and absolutely everything about the organization and the world it exists in has changed. And philosophically, having editors who can also write freelance for the company and hire one another both seemed like a clear-cut conflict of interests and unfair competition for the genuine 100% writers who were vying for the same assignments. So these days, writers write and editors edit.
