How is a character's skin tone becoming lighter a natural drift?

Like with any costume or appearance shift, it’s the result of the latest artist or colorist referencing the most recent material, but not the material further back. So if one colorist makes the skin tone a bit lighter in a particular issue–even if the issue is, I don’t know, under bright lights or something, that makes it more likely that somebody will pick that up as reference and use it to color the next job–and on it goes.
