  • Hank changed his name via conscious decision. Monica was forced to change her name twice by editorial to make way for the new Captain Marvel and later Photon. I can see Captain Marvel because that name has a lot of cache, but the Photon thing was lame and unneeded, more obviously now because the name never lasted. I know Marvel tried to play it off when Monica confronted him, but if any character tried to take a name like, say... Cyclops, Cyke would say "the hell you are."

I’m sorry, but your first line made me laugh out loud. These are both fictional characters. They both changed their names and persona by editorial fiat–in Hank’s case, because the Ant-Man series was dying on the vine (and the change to Giant-Man didn’t really help matters.)

The plain fact of the matter is that virtually nobody liked Photon as Monica’s codename, which is why she’s been so often referred to as simply Monica Rambeau. The hope is that Spectrum will both more definitively describe what she does, and will prove to have more staying power. but if it doesn’t, then we’ll eventually try something else. It’s not like Photon is being used at the moment. But who would want it?
