There’s a difference between preference and business. In my perfect world, sure, I’d like it better if we could just keep to one set of numbers and that would be that. But in the same way that my preference is to have a consistent creative team on an Event series, the changes in the world around me have proven to me that my preference is not one that is shared with the majority of the readership. And as I say constantly in this forum, we ultimately follow you guys, the readers–what you do, though, rather than what you say. And ultimately, no, I don’t think there’s any problem with the renumbering per se. Before UNCANNY X-MEN was the longest running continuously numbered series, another series held that title–and it ceasing to didn’t hurt anything. All it means is that something has changed. And it can only marginalize stories if those stories do not have an immediate bearing on what is transpiring in the series now. We’re carrying fifty plus years of history around behind most of our core characters, so it is impossible for absolutely everything to be relevant at all times, regardless of the number on the cover. My guess is that the Death of Gwen Stacy will remain relevant in the years to come, but the story in AMAZING SPIDER-MAN #123 will be less relevant, until somebody decides to explicitly refer to it again.
