  • It seems to me that DC, with New52, is currently in a mode where their characters are in more idealized roles than Marvel's--certainly updated, but very recognizable in a general sense. In contrast, Marvel seems to be far away from the status quo at the moment. The X-Men don't resemble the "classic" period of the late 70's/80's, the Hulk is unrecognizable compared to the classic version, Doc Ock is now Spider-Man, the Avengers seem more like the Justice League, etc. How intentional is this?

    Not especially. I would argue that these things are as far away from those classic periods as you feel they are. The one that’s furthest away is SUPERIOR SPIDER-MAN, and even that is still recognizably Spider-Man. If I picked up a reader from 1982 and gave then the current issue, they’d still recognize it, even if they didn’t understand how it had gotten to this point.
