Obviously, the optimism only goes so far and isn't in every book. New Avengers is a very weighty, tough book, but I think it shines through in Mighty Avengers (and I think Greg Land is actually doing pretty good work there, though some of that is that is the male heavy cast to work with that pushes him away from some of his worst excesses. I'm enjoying the layouts though). BUT it's appreciated right now where it does show up, be it Daredevil or FF. Superhero comics should be able to be super.
I think there’s more to it than just optimism, though. Not every book or every character needs to be the same. But certainly a general sense that super heroes are heroes, and that what they’re doing is self-sacrificing and in the defense of those who do not have the advantage of their specialized abilities is a pretty necessary component–one we sometimes lose sight of. If every single person in your comic book is a super hero, chances are something’s not firing right.
