"It’s a stone-cold fact that bad things are going to happen to super heroes in super hero comics—without those stakes, you wouldn’t be interested in them." Maybe, but virtually every one of those bad things get reversed, the resurrection rate compared to those who stay in eternal rest is pretty high, so maybe at some point you've got to find a different way to either amp up the stakes or not bring 'em back so frequently.
Based on the reactions this past week to the passing of the Scarlet Witch, Wonder Man and Rogue, I’d say that we don’t need to worry about readers being invested in character deaths, no matter how many of them they may have experienced before, or how many characters have come back. It’s funny, but people always clamor for the characters to always stay dead–and then we kill somebody’s beloved favorite, and they immediately turn around and begin to campaign for a resurrection. So the fan rule seems to be, “You should keep all of the characters that you’ve killed that I don’t care about dead.’ Which is a lot harder to implement.
