I loved INFINITY. That said, is it fair to ask what parts, if any, of the story were pitched by Hickman then massaged by Marvel? People I talked to seem to think that the triple-plot (Builders, Inhuman Bomb, Thanos) hurt the intimacy of the story. Interviews with Hickman make it seem like the book was meant to all fit in INFINITY proper. I'm not accusing, but were pieces like Thanos and the Inhumanity lead-in always intended to be there, or were they massaged in to synchronize with future plans?

Nothing was massaged by Marvel, everything was massaged by Hickman. It’s not accurate to say that there was a story that Jonathan pitched, and then there was another Frankensteined story that we did. In our original plan, there would have been six issues of AVENGERS at around this time dealing with the Avengers Universe plotline. But those weren’t solidly plotted or anything. So instead, the story got larger, and took advantage of some of the elements that were floating around in the zeitgeist at the time, and became INFINITY. But all of that was Jonathan’s doing.
