  • Hi Tom! I'm a big fan of what Marvel's doing with Savage Wolverine - standalone arcs where the creative team gets shaken up (I buy A+X too, but I like how we get an arc out of SW). My question is why don't you do more of it? My guess would be that rotating creative teams / stories probably make financial forecasts more of a crapshoot but I was wondering if it's more that only Wolvie or Spidey could support such, for lack of a better word, turbulence and still sell.

It’s not a question of financial forecasts, it’s more a question of financial realities. Books of this sort seem to have a harder time maintaining a readership over the long haul as, once again, readers begin to feel that the stories “don’t count.” It also depends very much on the talent involved–while such titles typically start off strong, relatively soon the publishing schedule requires you to use creators that are perhaps not as exciting to the audience as a whole, which starts the process of readers wondering just how necessary the stories are.
