  • Stop Slurring Krishna, Marvel

I think Marvel should rename the Juggernaut out of religious sensitivity. The term ‘juggernaut’ was coined by 17th century Christians who claimed that Hindus sacrificed themselves to Jaggernaut (Krishna), by throwing themselves beneath a wagon bearing his effigy. It was meant to slur the Hindu religion by portraying Indians as crazed in their devotion to pagan gods.

The term remains a symbol of a destructive force, as it was originally intended. Certainly that is how Marvel uses it. Just as Marvel stopped portraying Asians with yellow skin and buck teeth, and embraced Islam, so too should it be wary of using terminology that is rooted in religious bigotry.

    Thank you.

I think there’s a bit of a difference between the portrayal of the Yellow Claw and the use of a term like Juggernaut which has entered the parlance.
