  • Thanks for answering my questions. Following up on variants though, I know I'm not obligated to buy them but as a longtime fan and collector of FF it'd be great if I didn't have to pony up the dough for 'em or feel like I'm missing something from my collection every time a new #1 pops up. Especially now that it seems like we're going to be getting new #1's pretty regularly, it seems excessive to mark each with half a dozen variants. Also, weren't they ultimately bad for the industry in the '90s?

I’m not a big believer in begrudging the existence of things that aren’t essential to my existence. I can’t afford to buy every movie I might like in every format I might like, or every book I might like, or see every television series I might like, and so forth. But the fact that there’s stuff out there that I’ll never be able to experience doesn’t bother me. I understand the completist gene–but you have to understand that this is a choice. You feel the way you feel, of course, but i think that feeling put out because somebody publishes some stuff that you won’t buy or don’t want to buy is a bit ridiculous. You are under no obligation whatsoever. With variants, some people like them, enough for them to be fiscally successful almost without fail. And so, as always, we’re going to follow what the marketplace tells us. And no, they weren’t bad for the industry in the 90s by themselves–that’s simplifying down a far more complex situation (and one involving enhanced covers more than variant covers anyway) into something that doesn’t really accurately represent teh truth.
