You said that serial numbering is just a stylistic convention of comics so can you see a day when comics may start using a more conventional system for example marking the comics by year and month like a lot of magazines do so I would be picking up the Nov 2013 issue of Avengers instead of number whatever? Possibly with the issue numbers just referring to the current ark starting again when a new ark begins with a new number 1. This seems to be the route some Marvel titles are taking anyway.
That’s possible, but not likely. The convention of numbering comics is so tightly ingrained in the culture of comic books as this point that it seems unlikely to ever go away–especially when a new #1 or a centennial issue will always sell better than the average issue, which is something that any publisher would want to be able to take advantage of.
