  • I bought CATACYLSM #0.1 and thought it was fantastic. I have to honestly say that since reconnecting with comics in 2009 this event has the most epic feel to it compared to anything and everything from Dark Reign to now.

A huge portion of my excitement for this event is that the readers don’t know what’s going to happen to the Ultimate Universe after this. As a semi-intelligent reader, I know that the “Earth-shattering changes” in every yearly/bi-yearly event won’t last too long, and even if there are big repercussions they come off as more of a launch pad for the next big thing which usually gets announced half-way through. I think INFINITY is a stellar event, but a lot of the luster is lost knowing what it already leads into. Don’t get me wrong – I’m a person who literally grew up with the Internet. I know how fast information gets around and the reasoning behind teasing INHUMANITY during INFINITY. But I can’t deny that as a reader the “launching pad” effect to an event waters down the comic I hold in my hand right now.

Marvel fans have no clue what’s happening for the Ultimate Universe after CATACYLSM. The big scuttlebutt is that the line will be cancelled with somehow saving the ULTIMATE SPIDER-MAN portion in some form. This kind of darkness transcends the usual 6 month status quo update, or a big change that will most likely (with the rare exception such as ONE MORE DAY or DARK REIGN) be rectified relatively quickly in terms of number of “fallout” issues. This event may not just cause an end to a fictional Earth or universe, but an actual entire publishing line. Nothing has been announced about the Ultimate Universe post-Catacylsm and it’s entirely refreshing and makes me more vested as a reader.

I hope this message comes across as more of an opinion piece and constructive criticism than a bashing. The way CATACYLSM is being handled is phenomenal and I hope you can find ways to recreate the depth of suspense presented with this event.
