At the same time, if BotA had been told monthly in one X-Men book, as it might have been in the past, I could freely have followed that story AND Fearless Defenders, plus probably multiple other Marvel titles. I don't necessarily disagree with your points, but Battle of the Atom would have been the same story told in one monthly book as it has been in four, at which point money could easily have been spent on other books.

I disagree, it wouldn’t have been the same story, in that the velocity at which the tale is being told is part of the appeal. If it had been told monthly, at this point you’d be saying, “Ugh! Another issue with these Future X-Men! When will this thing be over? And how does it reconcile with what’s going on in all of the other X-titles?” and so forth. Also, you’re as likely to have bought a cheeseburger with that extra money as a copy of FEARLESS DEFENDERS, or about a million other things. As a reader, you’ve got to take responsibility for what you choose to read and follow, and the consequences of that are what they are if enough like-minded readers do the same.
