It feels like characters personalities/traits are being ignored in order to fit a writers story instead of respecting who the character is. It feels like a writer gets an idea for a story and it becomes immaterial how ridiculous it is that the chosen character is in the position they are in so long as it allows the writer to showcase the event they want to tell. Shouldn't the editor or someone be stopping this or are they not allowed to interfere with the writers to that degree? If not why not?

You’re assuming that the editors in question agree with your assessment. That’s not necessarily true. If those stories are making their way into print, it’s because the editor thinks that they’re worthwhile. And as I talked about yesterday, everybody’s got a slightly different viewpoint on who and what these characters are all about.
