I not sure if you can answer this , but how can you tell the difference between a writers or artist unique style of storytelling and any shortcomings on their part? For example, people often talk about Hickman's grandiose story-telling and great characterization, yet his writing can come across as cold to some. If I could put this another way how do writers and artist balance between artistic choice and the needs of the consumer?
Every creator is going to bring something different to the table, and is going to have their own individual strengths and weaknesses. That goes for your favorite creators and the most popular creators as well as newcomers. You hire people based on what you think they will bring to a particular series, and you work to make them stronger in the areas in which they may not be too strong. But it’s not a decision between a style of storytelling and a shortcoming–from a technical standpoint, anything that doesn’t communicate the story clearly and effectively doesn’t work. But there are also a million different readers with a million different tastes, so what works for you might not work for the next fan, and vice versa.
