Tom, Newsarama posted a list over the weekend of the '10 best FEMALE supervillains' and reading it all I could think was how shitty of a list it was, and how terrible I felt because I didn't have any better replacements for the people on it. Given how much people want diversity in comics, shouldn't we be acknowledging that diversity can and should exist for the villains as well?

Maybe. It’s a tough question, because as there are fewer characters of a given type as a whole–and I’m speaking more generally than about just female characters here, I’m talking about any particular demographic of character–the characters that do exist tend to become more exemplars of their demographic. So a female villain isn’t just a female villain, she becomes somehow a commentary on “Marvel’s beliefs and attitudes towards women.” Or towards whatever demographic you might substitute in there. So sure, there should be female villains just the same as anybody else, but there are added issues and complications to doing such characters.
