I think that the passage of time means that elements of the characters are going to change–some because they’re tethered to specific moments in history that no longer fit within the lifespan of the character, some because they reflect the societal and cultural mores of the time in which they were created, and no longer ring true. This can be a tough thing for readers to wrap their minds around, because we all become so invested in the fictional lives of these characters and the time and experience we’ve put into reading them. I can remember being upset the first time I read that the Fantastic Four got their powers while attempting an intergalactic flight–I knew that was wrong, that they were trying to beat the Commies to the moon when they got hit by the cosmic rays. But that didn’t work in whatever year that was, let’s say 1980 for the sake of argument. The race for the moon was long over (and the Cold War would be likewise before too long) so that had to change.
