  • I'm not sure if its appropriate to ask you but i was wondering what your thoughts on DC's situation and the comic industry in general are. As a long time reader i've seen way more cancellations is that because the market is demanding it or because editors are expecting better results? I'm a big fan of DC but it seems like theyre literally trying out every character they possibly can to see if they can hold a solo series without looking for creative solutions to the problem. Am i right?

Putting the specific question of DC aside for a moment, the larger issue that you’re seeing here is a change in the overall marketplace. Once upon a time, almost any new series stood a reasonable chance of success, at least for a certain amount of time, assuming that we’re mostly talking about “Big Two” company books. But nowadays–much as is the situation with television viewership–the larger number of and variety of options available, as well as the higher cover prices, means that it’s more difficult to maintain the critical mass of readers that you need to keep a title going for the long term. Consequently, there are more cancellations overall, and the number of brand new titles that become perennials is relatively slim. But that doesn’t mean that you stop trying stuff, especially different things, to see if you can find something that will attract enough of a readership to continue indefinitely. But it isn’t easy at all.
