I think why people believe gambit to be a summers even tho the end is not canon is more to do with marvel then anything. in interviews with Joe Q and Claremont they say the story is in continuity to a point and aspects of the story would be answered

I think the reason people believe Gambit to be a Summers is their unrelenting desire for him to be a Summers, and evidence one way or the other doesn’t enter into it.
