Does growing your characters necessarily sound a death knell as you claim? DC has wiped out the history of their characters and started younger and fresher and you certainly don't think that has it really made them a better entity in the long run, right? Plus again, was this not the very purpose of the Ultimate line? To give a new generation their FF, Avengers, Spider man??

You’re arguing all over the place here, and none of this is what we’re talking about. One of the reasons why it’s never been necessary to restart the Marvel Universe as DC has multiple times is that we’re careful about not letting the characters age too much–and when one of them gets out of hand, we’ll typically do something to deal with the problem. And saying that there’s something else over there that’s “good enough” for incoming readers is a spurious argument. Like all readers, new readers want the stuff they read to “matter” in the same fictitious way that you do. Setting them up a nice little ghetto and pretending that you’re doing them a service is totally self-serving, and won’t come close to accomplishing the objective.
