Tom, as someone who has been involved in media and the comics fandom for a lot longer than I've been alive, do you ever feel that being a comics fan (or sci-fi or games or [insert nerdy thing here] fan) is a self-fulfilling prophecy? Like members of the various nerdy fandoms are presented a certain way in most mediums, and as such people who are like that gravitate towards these fandoms?

I don’t think so, and that sounds like it’s tinged with a little bit of self-loathing. As we’ve seen over the course of the last two decades, interest in the sorts of things that used to be considered the providence of fannish weirdos has become far more mainstream. Heck, there are hundreds of thousands of people gathered in San Diego right this very moment to prove it. So that perception is changing–in essence, we’ve won the culture wars. All of the best-performing films are either super hero movies or science fiction epics or cartoons. So i think that stereotype of the comics/sci-fi/gaming/whatever fan as the nerdy guy is a fading stereotype that’s only going to become less prevalent as more and more mainstream members of society grow comfortable with their interest and love for this sort of material.
