  • Does it offend you when Marvel creators do creator-owned stuff on the side? Doesn't that seem ungrateful, like, if they really would rather be working on their own comics than Marvel's why don't you kindly leave the building and never darken this door again? John Buscema didn't need to go cheat on his wife to pay the rent.

    Our creators aren’t cattle and they aren’t slaves, and there are a myriad of opportunities out there. So sure, we want to make Marvel a place where people want to work and to earn a good living, but if creatively or commercially or career-wise people feel the need to go elsewhere, whether creator-owned or otherwise, that’s perfectly fine (provided that they meet or have met all of their agreed-upon commitments to Marvel). So no, we’re not offended when people go off to do their own thing. And quite often, it’s people doing their own thing that brings them to our attention in the first place, and gets them in the door at Marvel.
