Why do you think X-fans are so paranoid about marvel downplaying the X-Men because movie rights conspiracy? Spider-Man movies make WAY more money than X-Films yet nobody claims you're "not in the business to make IPs for Sony" or claim that any story in which Spidey isn't prominent is part of a conspiracy.
There was a period of time in the 90s where the X-MEN line virtually was the Marvel line–it got all of the prime resources and marketing, because it sold so well. Likely some of those fans are nostalgic for that period.
