  • Was Mockingbird created for Hawkeye because someone had some old DC Green Arrow and Black Canary plots to recycle? I'm sure that kind of thing happens a lot -- especially at 90s Image! ;) -- and all 4 characters have evolved substantially since then, but the behind-the-scenes creation process is so fascinating.

No, Mockingbird as a character goes back many years earlier. She first appeared as Bobbi Morse in KA-ZAR in the very early 70s, then became The Huntress in a black and white magazine, and finally became Mockingbird in an issue of MARVEL TEAM-UP around 1980. All this before she met Hawkeye. Mind you, pairing her up with Hawkeye was likely Mark Gruenwald playing off the Green Arrow and Black Canary idea, but not because he had some DC stories to recycle, simply because he liked that sort of thing.
