Isn't part of the point of those anthology books to debut new characters and develop underdeveloped ones for future use and better licensing with the idea that it's anchored by a stronger character. Obviously this is trickier now when Wolverine is appearing in 5-8 titles a month already. Like anything, i think the key is to make the lead story in a MCP as important as BWS' Weapon X was at the time. Let the readers know that the anchor for the comic isn't just an inventory story and they'll come.
No, it’s really not–I can’t think of a character in recent memory who grew out of an anthology series to become important–not since the 1970s at least, and even then in most cases it took another decade or two of the character appearing elsewhere. And it’s also nowhere near as easy to “Make the lead story always important” as you seem to think. In terms of MCP, apart from Barry’s WEAPON X storyline, were there any other Wolverine stories in its 175 issue run that were “important”? Heck, how many of them can you even still remember?
