  • But still, why are almost all Marvel's gay heroes second and third tier characters? That's the meat of the question, isn't it? The Ultimate segment of the question was just an illustration of how Marvel could've done something unique and given gay heroes a prominent spot while not eradicating decades of history.

    And the answer is really that most of the characters who form the bedrock of the Marvel Universe, the characters everybody recognizes as first tier, were created in the 1960s when the question of sexual orientation wasn’t one that came up in comics in the way it does now–it was a purely straight world, in the same manner that it was 99% purely white and extremely male.
