  • I remember reading somewhere the reason the Champions failed is because they didn't have any real reason to exist; they were just a slapdash thrown together assemblage done by the numbers of some super team formula with no real concept behind it. It feels like a lot of Avenger teams fit this criteria these days. Obviously you'll disagree, so please explain why do all these Avenger teams need to exist?

Need is perhaps a strong word, but then I don’t entirely agree with your wording on the Champions situation either. I believe that any title needs to possess a core concept that allows it to stand on its own space and carve out its own niche among everything else that Marvel is publishing, and ideally everything else that’s being published. The titles with the best chance of success have this. So with the expansion of the Avengers franchise, we’ve attempted to make sure that every title has its own distinct mission statement and reason for being. Some of them may be more legitimate than others–but all of them, I suspect, are more sound than the mission statement for CHAMPIONS, which was never very well-defined, and tried to be retro-fit into the series after the fact.
