Tom, silly question: if buying a physical copy of a 3.99 issue gets me a free digital code, why would I pay 3.99 for just a digital copy of it? either the digital issue is clearly not worth 3.99, or the physical copy isn't worth it.

Well, you’d pay for it because you want it, and it’s worth that value to you. The fact that you can get it elsewhere under different terms doesn’t change that essential transaction. Not everybody has access to a comic shop, for example, and may not be able to locate a tangible copy for purchase. And some may simply not want to occupy the space a tangible copy (or a stack of them) takes up.
