Tom, I remember you getting upset about the lack of real journalism skill when doing reviews for comics on various websites, but do you feel the same about interviews? It seems like every new run or arc has the same questions, and one that always bothers me is "what does [insert artist] bring to the book?" and the answer is always "oh [artist] is amazing!" Are writers not allowed to speak the truth regarding their feelings on the artists?
I think that interviews vary, both in terms of their length and the skill of both the interviewer and the person being questioned. In terms of writers speaking about artists, I think they’re being honest–I mean, what do you expect them to say about the people they’re working with? But one of the reasons I expect that it’s difficult to vary up the answer to that question all that much is that it’s fundamentally challenging to be able to articulate the subtleties of the skill-set of a single artist as opposed to all other artists in a way that doesn’t sound canned.
